What is an electrical installation condition report?

EICRs are Electrical Installation Condition Reports, replacing periodic inspection reports, as they were once widely known. During the checks, all fixed wiring and electrical installations are assessed by a competent professional, such as a qualified electrical contractor.

After EICR completion, you’ll receive an official report detailing the checks completed and any system defects measured against UK standards.

How often do businesses require an EICR?

How often a business requires an EICR update will depend on a variety of factors, such as when the last inspection was, any changes to the electrics, the type of installations present and the use of the building. Landlords may even choose to book a fresh report at changes of tenancy.

The duty holder of commercial premises responsible for health and safety matters has a legal obligation to ensure EICRs are kept up to date within the specified timeframe. This means booking new inspections at set intervals, whether you’re in charge of a warehouse, cinema, school, café, hospital or other facilities.

For many businesses and commercial organisations, a new EICR should be arranged within five years of the last report. However, in higher-risk environments, such as industrial units, holiday parks, medical facilities and public entertainment venues, testing every three years is often a safer bet. What do EICR checks involve?

During the electrical assessments, your contractor will complete a series of checks to identify deterioration or defects.
